New Forms, as it is colloquially known, has a done a great job over the years of bringing high-calibre musicians and producers to Vancouver, with curation that undoubtedly introduces a lot of people to a lot of new music and great artwork. For me personally, last year introduced me to techo dons Marcellus Pittman and Spektre and the always incredible Sun Araw band. Art can be very, very fun. Especially when it’s presented in a warehouse rave. That’s the message I carried home from the twelfth installation of Vancouver’s New Forms Festival’s meticulously curated selection of electronic music and audiovisual installations by artists from Vancouver and the internet-connected world. It seems to me that New Forms Festival has taken a major step forward this year, attracting many artists’ inaugural Vancouver performances, and as a result it generated quite a bit of positive chatter among the attendees.

Everyone that I spoke with had their own artist that they were excited about seeing, which kept conversations lively. The diversity of talent, and the substantial repertoire each artist brought to the fold, added to the overall feel for quality this year. – Nicole Goodman, CBC
